DEANS
DEPARTMENT CHAIRS
DIRECTORS
CHIEF PERSONNEL OFFICERS

University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has provided updated guidance on academic appointees teleworking abroad, reflecting the narrow exception for international telework through December 31, 2021.

The following academic appointees are permitted to temporarily telework from overseas, by exceptional approval, if they are:

  1. Academic appointees (including student employees) who have a visa but are subject to a travel restriction and cannot enter the U.S;
  2. Newly appointed academic appointees (including student employees) who have been unable to obtain their visa to enter the U.S; and
  3. Current academic appointees (including student employees) who have been unable to renew their visa to enter the U.S.

Any request from academic appointees residing in countries with current US trade sanctions (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Crimea Region of Ukraine) will require review and approval for export controls clearance by the Office of Research. This will be managed by the Office of Academic Personnel or Graduate Division.

For academic appointees who will require temporary teleworking from overseas, please complete the Overseas Telework Exception Request form and submit to the Office of Academic Personnel (for non-student academic employees). For Academic Student Employees, Graduate Student Researchers, etc., please continue to send the spreadsheet with all the student information to Ruth Quinnan rquinnan@uci.edu and Celina Y. Mojica cmojica@uci.edu in Graduate Division for review and approval.

In order to provide additional guidance on academic appointees teleworking abroad, UCOP has created frequently asked questions.

For additional questions regarding non-student academic employees, please email the Office of Academic Personnel at acadpers@uci.edu. For questions regarding Academic Student Employees or Graduate Student Researchers, please email Ruth Quinnan rquinnan@uci.edu and Celina Y. Mojica cmojica@uci.edu from Graduate Division.

Sincerely,

Diane K. O’Dowd
Vice Provost for Academic Personnel

Gillian R. Hayes
