Last year, the Office of Academic Personnel issued guidance indicating that additional compensation for individuals teaching in self-supporting programs would have to be taken as salary at the time of service

I understand that this has caused significant concern for some faculty who are interested in using these additional compensation payments, deposited into an Academic Enrichment Fund (AEF) account, to support their scholarly/creative work.

In response to these concerns and after further consultation with campus stakeholders, the Office of Academic Personnel has revised our guidance to allow faculty members to elect for their additional compensation deposited into an AEF account in lieu of salary.

When a faculty member elects to receive funds in an AEF account they must sign an AEF election form acknowledging that they understand that these funds cannot, at any time, be used for their own salary. The full campus guidance on AEF accounts is available at: https://ap.uci.edu/addtlcomp/. We also recommend that you contact the Budget Office and/or Accounting Office to assist your school to develop a method to keep track of these funds in order to identify them as having this restriction.

This change in policy is effective September 2021.
