The Rose Hills Innovator Grant Program supports meritorious early-career faculty at UC Irvine interested in developing highly innovative research programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); biomedical research is eligible for support.
Award
The award can range from about $10,000 to $50,000. Awards may be used to support:
- Postdoctoral and other researchers
- Graduate and/or undergraduate students
- Faculty summer salary (up to 19 days*)
- Publication expenses and/or patent application fees
- Research materials, small equipment, and/or supplies
- Travel expenses
*Summer salary is charged a limited composite benefit rate (CBR) and will need to be taken into account when budgeting the number of days that can be supported. Summer salary must be paid in whole-day increments. There is no overhead charged to this award.
Awardees should plan to expend the funds within a year. If a recipient is unable to use the funds in one year, an extension for the continued use of the funds must be requested by emailing Melissa Aguirre at m.agurirre@uci.edu. Awardees are required to spend all funds before being granted tenure. If a Fellow has unspent funds from this award upon receiving tenure, the remaining balance will be returned to the Office of the Vice Provost, Academic Personnel for redeposit in the applicable fund.
Eligibility
Full time senate faculty at the assistant ranks of these series: professor, professor of teaching, in-residence, and professor of clinical X.
Note: Assistant Professors who will be considered for tenure in the 2024-25 academic year will not be eligible to apply for a Rose Hills Fellowship.
Evaluation Criteria
All applications will be reviewed by an advisory panel of faculty:
- Impact of receiving a Rose Hills Fellowship
- Innovation
- Quality of Proposal (clarity of aims/goals and methodology and significance)
- Candidate accomplishments
- Addresses inclusive excellence
Application
Proposals should be submitted by individual faculty members using the Rose Hills Foundation Innovator Grant application form.
Required components of the application include:
- The Rose Hills Foundation Innovator Grant application form.
- A project description with a maximum length of three pages. The project description should explain both the nature and significance of the project as well as inclusive excellence. Applicants are advised to provide project descriptions that can be understood by members of the selection committee who may not be in their STEM discipline.
- One-page itemized budget.
- An abbreviated C.V. (maximum length – 5 pages)
Awards will be confirmed in June, and the effective date of the award is July 1st.
