2019-2020 Academic Year Updates

During our Fall Kick-Off Academic Personnel Review Process, there were two key items that required follow-up after Senate Cabinet review and further consultation with the Council on Academic Personnel:

  1. Consideration of non-collegiality in merit and promotion process, and
  2. Tentative Decision letters.

Consideration of Non-collegiality in the Review Process

Starting in the 2019-2020 review cycle, we are providing guidance for how to address non-collegial behavior, behavior that undermines a faculty member’s ability to provide effective service and/or disrupts the efforts of other faculty, staff, students, to fulfill their responsibilities. Specifically, if non-collegiality is raised as an issue at the department level it is the Chair’s responsibility, in their letter to the Dean, to be specific about the nature of the behavior, the efforts to address the offending behavior, and the outcomes of such efforts. The Dean’s letter should also comment on and/or contextualize the non-collegial behavior. This is described, along with examples, in our updated APP-3-60-H, Consideration of Non-collegiality in the Review Process.

Tentative Decision Process in a Review File

Starting with the 2019-2020 review cycle, the tentative decision process following the Council on Academic Personnel (CAP) review will be optional, not mandatory, when there is disagreement at one or more levels of review.

When new information is provided in the tentative decision response, it might require highlighted updates of new information on the UCI AP-10, Addendum form. CAP has elaborated on its processes via the CAP Tentative Decision FAQ, which can be found at: https://ap.uci.edu/files/2019/12/CAP-Tentative-Decision-FAQ.pdf.
