The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has approved a change in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) effective January 1, 2020. The revised rule increases the minimum salary threshold for overtime-exempt employees from the currently enforced level of $455 per week (equivalent to $23,660 per year for a full-year worker) to $684 per week (equivalent to $35,568 per year for a full-year worker.)
All non-faculty, non-student academic appointees (new hires and current appointees) who earn less than $684/week ($35,568/year) will be classified in non-exempt status and continue to report hours worked and be subject to the DOL overtime regulation.
To facilitate the determination of whether these academic appointees meet the weekly earning threshold, we have created applicable salary tables for appointments in these job codes to remain FLSA exempt. As this policy decision affects several groups of employees, the following implementation guidelines and timetable is provided below.
